Derek Newsome is a 37-year-old drifter originally from Wicklow, Ireland who has spent years competing in the Irish drifting scene and now has moved to Australia. Growing up around trucks, cars and bikes, motorsport was always close by. His first exposure came through his dad, who raced dirt bikes, and from there the interest in engines and driving quickly stuck.
Newsome spent many years competing in Ireland and watched the rise of fellow Irish driver James Deane from the beginning of his career. Seeing that progression firsthand left a big impression and helped fuel his own motivation to keep competing.

One of the biggest highlights of his career so far came in 2017 when he took victory at Global Warfare at Mondello Park.
He currently competes in a 1989 Nissan Silvia S13 powered by a forged LS3 engine paired with nitrous and a G-Force dog box transmission. The setup produces over 650 horsepower. One of his favourite features of the car is the NASCAR-style air filter sticking through the bonnet, along with the aggressive sound the car produces on track.

Beyond the track, we love to learn a little more about the drivers themselves.
